Alessandro Rotta Loria Receives Curriculum Innovation Award
The Alumnae of Northwestern University announced Alessandro Rotta Loria as one of two recipients of their 2022 Award for Curriculum Innovation. The award recognizes and helps to fund Rotta Loria’s plan to deploy a network of wireless temperature sensors in underground areas of downtown Chicago, providing students in his Energy Geostructures and Geosystems course with a unique and constantly updating portrait of subterranean thermal energy availability in a major city. Students will be tasked with proposing new methods for utilizing this energy as a means of temperature control in large buildings, replacing other fuel sources while recycling what is often waste heat emanating from the city itself.
