Sustainable Urban Systems

Sustainable urban systems provide a high quality of life – with economic, social, and environmental benefits distributed equitably across the community – in the face of natural, climate, technological, and societal disruptions. Methodologies and tools developed by engineers that lead to sustainable urban systems include sensor networks, social media, machine-learning systems, green infrastructure, systems and life-cycle analysis, and distributed manufacturing. They also include financial and insurance instruments and community engagement used to address urban challenges in transportation, power and communication networks, health and social services, housing, arts and recreation, food provisioning, jobs and economic development, parks and natural areas, and infrastructure and the built environment.
